I had a fun-filled graduation session recently with Judeena and her family. Judeena was celebrating her graduation with a conjoint Arts and Engineering degree from Auckland University.

As well as taking still imagery, I took some video and have combined them in this fusion video.

A new adventure in my photographic journery has begun...

Fusion is a mixture of still imagery and moving pictures. I've been taking stills for a long time, but I am now starting to take moving images and record audio as well. Blending them all together gives me a powerful way to tell a story.

This is my first fusion video, of my two kids Jasmine and Zachary having fun on a sunny afternoon at the park. Try viewing it a full screen!

At a recent family photo session at the beach, Michael joyfully lifted baby Aveia up into the air. It was a lovely moment, and when I was processing this image, I noticed some gorgeous little details. I love how you can see the sand, backlit beautifully by the late afternoon sun, flying off Aveia's feet.

Discovering these details is like finding a little surprise present under your pillow... I never cease to feel amazed at the way photography can capture a moment like this forever.

Workshop - Creative Uses of Slow Shutterspeed

At our recent workshop we played with slow shutterspeed... spinning, zooming and generally dancing with our cameras, painting with light, and incorporating flash. I also got the chance to be the model, which was fun! I have to say, though, that I'm probably better behind the camera than in front of it.

Clark Family

I had a fabulous shoot with the Clark Family at Karaka Bay.

This beach is one of the places that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed at. It also has special significance for Saffron and Chris, as they got married here.

I loved documenting them sharing this special place with their two gorgeous kids, Caelan and Siahn.

Photography Tip: Lens Length and Portraits

Your choice of lens length (wide angle, normal or telephoto) has a big effect on the way a person's face looks when you photograph them.

Take a look at these two images of my son Zachary. The only significant difference between them is lens length, coupled with the distance between the subject and the camera.

The first photo was taken with a 70mm lens (on a camera with a full frame sensor). This is quite a standard lens length choice for a portrait.

For the second photo, I came much closer to Zac and photographed him with the lens at 38mm. This is unusually short for a portrait, and the result is quirky. When you stand this close to a person, their nose and chin loom towards you, their eyes look big, and their ears and shoulders look small. Overall, their face looks slimmer.

It's not actually a distortion caused by the lens - you can see this effect with your very own eyes if you look carefully. Perspective is emphasised when you stand close to your subject.

I believe that every person has their own 'ideal viewing distance'. A person with a slim or long face will benefit from being photographed with a long lens from a distance (try 120mm or even longer). The flattening effect will suit them well.

A person with a round face will look more attractive when photographed from closer range, with a shorter lens (try 50mm).

A short lens length is also great when you want your portrait to have a slightly ridiculous feel to it. That's how comedians get those fun, quirky portraits of themselves!

Sizzling Salsa for the Studio Workshop

We had a fab Studio Workshop yesterday. For the last part of the workshop we photographed fantastic salsa dancers Irina and Conrad, who very patiently did their poses over and over for me and the six students. Irina runs a dance studio in the city, Dance Pro Studios.

Then we had fun using long exposures to capture movement blur.

Thanks to Irina and Conrad and to the students for another wonderful workshop.

Papua New Guinea - Jean's Story

Papua New Guinea

I recently spent a week in Alotau, Papua New Guinea, photographing the work of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ.

ImageMe is an official partner of the Foundation, and I jumped at the chance to photograph their PNG programme.

The Foundation was holding an outreach clinic in Alotau, and Papua New Guineans travelled from remote areas throughout the Milne Bay region to get help for their eye problems. For many, cataracts were removed, allowing them to regain their sight, and improve their lives and their family's lives.

As part of the work I photographed several sugeries - a new experience for me!

It was so moving to meet some of these people, to hear their personal stories, and to photograph the moment when the bandage was removed and their joy erupted.

The photos I took will be used to show Kiwis the amazing work the Foundation does, to help in their appeals. It really is a thrill to use my photographic skills to make a real difference.

The photos I took for the Foundation are under wraps for now, but here are a few snapshots of me in PNG.

Here I am with PNG eye nurses Getruth, Rosemary and Kesley. They were an absolute pleasure to work with!

Behind the Image - Fashion Victim

I thought I would share with you the story behind some of my award-winning photos. I first imagined this image back in the year 2000, when I was working with a photographer doing fashion shoots in San Francisco. I wanted to create an image that said something about the dangers of body image pressures on young women.

I finally shot the image in 2008 with Kate, our lovely babysitter who gallantly agreed to lie on our kitchen floor while I took photo after photo and asked her to place her limbs in some pretty uncomfortable positions!

This is the original capture. It took many many hours of Photoshopping to create the final tortured fashion victim that I had pre-visualised.

I added back in the make-up brushes that had been in an earlier shot and added a cool tone.

Then I changed the colour of the hairdryer and thinned my model, who, I am happy to say, was a healthy slim build rather than the emaciated girl I needed.

Finally, I decided to throw her head back further, and intensify the blue.

I see Photoshop as a powerful creative tool to help me communicate my message effectively. This image won silver at the NZIPP Iris Awards 2008, silver with distinction at the Australian APPA awards 2009, and was published in Her Magazine, Prodesign and the North Shore Times.

PS The nail polish did leave a nasty stain on the aged linoleum - but it was worth it.

A blissful afternoon

I had so much fun photographing gorgeous sisters Cata (10), Sofi (8) and Vicky (1) and their family on Tuesday. The girls have come with their parents from Buenos Aires to visit their Auntie in Auckland. A perfect moment to capture with a beach portrait session!

We had a chilled out, fun afternoon enjoying the sunshine and the beach. The older girls showed off their hopscotch skills while little Vicki played peek-a-boo over her Dad's shoulder.

Megan and I had a wonderful day on Saturday photographing Erica and Russell's romantic wedding at Lover's Cove, North Head.

Erica's adorable little sister Jessica made a very cute flowergirl, and Erica looked stunning in her full-length gown.

On the walk down to the beach the bride and her party were accompanied by a paraglider.

Photography Tip - Slow Synch

I want to share with you a really cool photographic technique using flash. It's one of my absolute favourites. It can be used for any kind of flash, whether it's a camera-mounted speedlight or a studio flash.

The technique is called slow synch or dragging the shutter. You may know that your camera has a maximum shutter speed that you can use when firing a flash. This is the 'synch speed' and is commonly between 1/125 and 1/250 of a second. You cannot use a faster shutter speed than this (unless you use a special feature called 'high speed synch' - we won't go into that here).

You can, however, go slower!

There are two really great reasons for using a slower shutter speed with flash. The first is that you can combine a frozen image with blurred movement. You can get a nice sharp portrait of a person, created by the pulse of light from the flash, and show motion blur as well. Perfect for the greedy photographer - it's like having your cake and eating it too!

Try it with the camera mounted on a tripod for a sharp background or handhold the camera to blur the background.

The second reason to drag the shutter is to balance ambient and flash. Basically, by using a longer shutter speed, you give the light in the environment (which is probably less intense than your flash) time to register on your sensor. This means that you can take a photo on top of One Tree Hill at night with your friend lit by the flash, and show the beautiful city lights behind as well.

Frenzy on Sunday!

After the success of our first Photo Frenzy, we can't wait for the next one this Sunday 17 January. It will be held at the studio, from 10am until 1pm.

This month's theme is Quirky Characters. Megan and I will photograph you in a way that looks a little... strange! Through the distortion created by perspective and the lens, heads get huge and feet become tiny! Check out this 'family portrait' of me with my husband John and our children, Jasmine and Zachary.

The Photo Frenzy is free and open to everyone, and we would love you to come. Feel free to bring your friends and family, and a silly hat or a fun costume, if you wish.

Gold coin donations will be accepted for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ - helping to restore sight in the Pacific region.

I had fun photographing the glamorous Stretton Family a few days before Christmas.

Even cute little doggie Holly seemed to smile for the camera!

Most of the family live in Brisbane and they found the weather freezing - I have to admit, it was an unseasonably chilly afternoon! Luckily it warmed up in time for Christmas Day.

Best of Both Worlds

It really is fantastic having our new studio so close to a gorgeous beach... This morning I photographed little cutie Xanthia with her Mum Erica and Dad Steve. 18-month-old Xanthia has amazing green eyes.

Busy little Xanthia ran around exploring the beach and occasionally paused for breath.

Then we went back to the studio for some more shots, giving us the best of both worlds!

At the start of 2008 I photographed Kian when he was just new to this world... and last week I was thrilled to meet his new baby brother, Malo, and photograph him at just six days old.

Malo was a sleeping angel.

On a shelf in a dairy near you (well near me anyway) is the latest issue of Good. I recently shot the cover and photos for the story all about bees.

It was supposed to be a lovely sunny day but we ended up shooting in drizzle and cold winds (deadlines ugh!). Our sweet models were wrapped up warmly between shots and we sheltered under umbrellas. The cover image required a large amount of post production work to make it look like a beautiful day.

They did a wee interview with me for their contributors page about how eco-friendly I am! I think my five year old is going to be the biggest greenie in our house.

For our workshop 'Photographing Families and Kids Outdoors' yesterday, we had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Frear-Hanson Family.

The Grand Opening!

We had a fabulous Opening event for our new studio on Friday evening... thanks so much to everyone who attended!

I told everyone about the fundraising we will be doing for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, and Pam Williams-Jones from The Foundation explained the work that the organisation does, restoring vision to blind people in the Pacific region.

We held a taster of our first Photo Frenzy, 'Drawing with Light', in the studio. I was hugely impressed with the creativity and drawing skills displayed!

We had the pleasure of photographing Irina during our Studio Workshop yesterday.

An extremely talented dancer, Irina made the six workshop participants - and myself - very happy with the wonderful poses, shapes and movement she created for us. We didn't want the session to end!Irina runs her own dance studio in the city, Dance Pro, and I can vouch for her wonderful dance instruction personally as my husband and I are learning Argentine Tango there. If only I had one tenth of her dancing ability :-)

Announcing... The Photo Frenzies

Starting on December 6th, we are going to hold an open studio event called a PHOTO FRENZY on the first Sunday of every month, from 10am - 1pm. (January is the exception, with the Frenzy being held on the 17th).

It's free and open to everyone, and each month there will be a different theme. Watch out for 'Quirky Characters', 'Hollywood Starlets' and more...

Our first theme, Drawing with Light, gives you the chance to get creative - take a look at Lisa with her flower and Megan licking her lollipop.

The images will be posted online so participants can purchase prints. The best images will be made into a large artwork and exhibited on the mezzanine floor of the Takapuna Library.

Photography Tip - Horizons

Horizons usually look better in photos if they are straight. And I mean dead straight. There is nothing worse than a slightly crooked horizon - it just looks like a mistake.

Now if I said that I always shoot my horizons straight I would be telling you a giant porker - the truth is, they are rarely completely straight. Luckily, horizons are easily fixed in Photoshop.

Here is an image with the horizon slightly higher on the right-hand side.

First, find the ruler tool (it hides under the eyedropper tool).

With the ruler tool draw a line along the horizon.

Then go to Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary. Press OK.

Your image will tilt. Now crop off the white bits and voila, you have a straight horizon.

Of course - rules are made to be broken. Tilted horizons can be fun but the mood of the image needs to suit - they work best with images with high energy, movement and excitement.

And remember, if you are going for a tilted horizon effect, make sure it's really tilted.

I am excited to announce that ImageMe has become an official partner of The Fred Hollows Foundation.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is carrying on the work of pioneering Kiwi eye doctor Fred Hollows. It's a Kiwi not-for-profit organisation dedicated to restoring sight and reducing avoidable blindness in the Pacific,

Papua New Guinea

and Timor-Leste.

Personally, I was shocked and saddened to find out that 80% of blindness in the world is treatable - in other words, 80% of the people who are blind in the world are actually blinded by poverty. Helping to restore a person's sight through a simple operation is truly a miracle - it brings amazing joy and improved quality of life not only to the person, but also their family and even their village. Here is a wonderful Campbell Live clip showing a grandmother in Fiji, Deonisia, seeing her children and grandchildren again after 9 years of blindness.

Here at ImageMe we will be donating $25 to The Fred Hollows Foundation for every family portrait session we do. $25 helps fund a simple cataract operation, such as Deonisia had. We will also be collecting donations at our monthly Photo Frenzy events - we will tell you more about the Frenzies soon!

Sizzling Hot Salsa!

I was wowed by the skills on display when I photographed the NZ Salsa Nationals recently.

As some of you may know, I am passionate about dance, although not a particularly talented dancer myself.

Congratulations to all the winners and a special congrats to the lovely Kseniya, who came third in the Open section with her dance partner Coco. Kseniya modelled for us during a Studio Portraits workshop, back in June.

125 Years Of Photography

Recently the Auckland Photographic Society celebrated their 125th anniversary with an exhibition of photographs in the Atrium of the Central City Library.

The images on display represented a huge range of styles and photographers. I was happy to have two of my images selected for the show (the tearful face and the ballerina).

It was fascinating seeing how photography trends have changed and yet often remained the same over time. Who knows where things will be in the year 2134?

Fashion Week

I had fun photographing the Trelise Cooper show at fashion week at the Auckland Viaduct.

For the most part the models managed to stay on their feet even in some very high heels. I quite fancied some of those shoes but was pretty happy to be in the media stand in my flat ones.

Studio Portraits Workshop

On Sunday I taught a workshop in the studio. One of the topics covered was lighting patterns and the different moods they create. Kevin, one of the photographers on the workshop, posed for the portraits above - I love the different result that a lighting change - and a black coat - can create. From boy-next-door to.... hmm...

For the final segment of the workshop we photographed Sarah Green, a tribal fusion bellydancer. Click here to watch the video!

She looked stunning in her dancing costume and was wonderful to photograph.

Daffodil Day 2009

Lisa and I were approached to photograph Daffodil Day for the Cancer Society this year. A coffee table book is being made about their wonderful volunteers and we were both happy to give our time to such a great charity.

I had the absolute pleasure of spending the morning with the lovely Joan Swift.

She's an amazing woman who has volunteered for the Cancer Society for over thirty years. She is the Auckland area coordinator and works from before dawn till very late each and every Daffodil Day. She's been doing it since the very first Daffodil Day!

Lisa headed over to the Bhana Brothers at 129 Ponsonby Road. Harry, Pravin and Arvind Bhana run a fruiterer/florist shop that has been in their family since the 1930s.

Every year they generously provide the flowers and prepare them to be sold by volunteers at a stand in front of the shop, with all profits going to the Cancer Society. This year they also sold poppies along with the daffodils, and a passing pooch decided that those poppies tasted pretty good!

It was great to see the generosity of people donating and the volunteers who had given up their time for the cause. We'll let you know when the books are printed so you can go and get yourself one.

On page 70 of this month's Good Magazine (in the "family" section) is my photo and wee article about the avid bug collector in our family. I took the magazine photo last spring when Reuben was investigating an earthworm in the backyard (pre-haircut!). I love photographing the boys and their everyday passions. 'Photographing Families Outdoors' Workshop

We did a family portrait session at North Head with our wonderful models, Steve, Maura and four-year-old Myara.

Sisters in the Sunshine

I had a lovely time photographing these two gorgeous four-year-old girls, Zoe and Taya, at the beach this morning. We were lucky to have a sunny break for our photo session, amongst all the rain!

The girls had a blast pretending to be pirates, peacocks, parrots, and koala bears. They even taught me that koalas have opposable thumbs. It's quite humbling to learn something new from a four-year-old!

My son Zachary turned six yesterday, and to celebrate the big occasion, we went down to Ruapehu for the day (with a sleep either side at Grandma and Grandad's house in Matamata). It was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for young Zac!
